Breast lift - Reduction mammoplasty
Reduction mammoplasty, or breast reduction, is a surgical procedure that reduces the size and changes the shape of the breasts. This surgery is usually performed to address physical ailments associated with large breasts, such as back, neck, and shoulder pain, skin irritation under the breasts, and difficulty with physical activity. It can also help improve self-esteem and psychological well-being.
How is breast reduction surgery performed:
1. Consultation: Before surgery, it is important to have a thorough consultation with your plastic surgeon to discuss expectations, possible results, and risks. Your doctor will review your medical history and perform a physical examination.
2. Surgical Procedure: The surgery typically takes 2 to 4 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes incisions on the breast, often in an anchor or reverse “T” shape, which includes an incision around the areola, a vertical incision up to the natural crease under the breast, and a horizontal incision along the crease.
3. Tissue Removal: Through these incisions, the surgeon removes excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin, then reshapes the remaining breast tissue to achieve the desired shape and size.
4. Nipple and Areola Repositioning: The nipple and areola are often repositioned to a higher position on the breast to achieve a natural look.
5. Completion of the operation: The incisions are closed with stitches, staples or skin glue.
Recovery from surgery:
• Swelling and bruising are expected after surgery. Mild pain may be felt for the first few days.
• Compression garments are recommended to maintain the new shape of the breasts and reduce swelling.
• In most cases, patients can return to light daily activities within 1-2 weeks, however, full recovery and return to active life may take several months.
